We are delighted to officially launch our Spring Summer '14 collection Rosa & I. From sorbet colors to roses and petals, this exuberant collection, Rosa & I, encompasses all things bright, rosy & yummy. Seeking inspiration from sweet days of summer, blooming roses & clear blue skies, it gives you a sense of romanticism with a hint of luxe!

Rosa & I, features improvised wooden bibs, beautifully finished etched wood & metal frame clutches, graphic hand painted surfaces, jewellery set in resin & dried flowers and elegant rose & dragon fly motifs. This season predominantly focuses on techniques such as resin, hand painted wooden panels & wood block etching.

Dried flowers like baby breaths & roses were set in resin to create one of a kind elements which were then juxtaposed against wood, leather & metal. The resin pieces provides lightness & airiness to the clutches.

The second technique explored was hand painted wood in abstract and graphic patterns wherein we have explored playing with form, color and line. Bold geometric patterns were directly created by hand onto the wood making each piece unique its own way.

Teak wood blocks were etched to create beautiful floral patterns on the surface of the wood. This technique helped us give our clutches a three dimensional twist to an already existing flat wooden surface. The play of light & dark lends a beautiful contrast and texture to the piece.

RR Fave Trends - WIFW SS’14

Just when you thought your fashion dose was over with Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive '13 held in August. October saw a flood of designs showcased by designers at the Wills India Fashion Week SS '14 yet again. Trends were set for the coming season - spring summer '14. From woven treasures to quirky prints, androgynous to feminine silhouettes, pastel to bright palettes, WIFW had it all for the coming season.

With so much buzz doing the rounds with trend reports and must have's, we at the Rachana Reddy Studio thought it would be a good idea to give you a quick take on some of our favorite trends for the coming season spring summer '14 and decode the entire fashion week in a simpler way - our style.

County Side Tales: Overtly feminine palette, lush blooms, polka dots and denims, rosy lips and braided hair set the tone for an old world charm and summertime country romance. Superior craftsmanship and beautiful detailing ruled the runway. 

Print overdose: Florals, abstracts, ornate geometrics,swirls and stripes - the runways were brimming with quirky and edgy prints of every size and shape for SS '14.

Sheer & Sheen: Glistening silk organza's, pastel chiffons, minimalistic pieces, fabric with a luminous glow, hints of sublte embellishment and feminine silhouettes are the new way to shine for spring summer. Simplicity and luxe come together to create timeless elegance.

The wait is finally over at the Rachana Reddy studio with our Festive '13 capsule collection ready to be launched this September in stores and online. In your anticipation of the Festive ‘13 we thought we'd give you a quick sneak peek at some of the most exciting and fresh elements from the collection. 

This year’s Festive '13 collection essentially plays around with pearls, swarovski crystals, shimmering gold mesh and a lot of bling in combination with our signature materials wood and leather. 

The shapes remain classic in nature, while the embellishment used brings out the spirit of celebration and festiveness. One of the main focuses of the collection is the contrast of embellishment against wood and leather.

RR Fave Winter Festive Trends '13

August witnessed five days of fashion frenzy known as the Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive, where designers showcased their outlook for the coming season and new trends were set.

With trend reports doing the rounds all over, we thought it would be a good idea to share with you some of the basic trends from this season which we love at Rachana Reddy!

We think this Festive season there’s going be a lot  of metallic’s, jewel tones, glitter, juicy crystals, gold and shimmer. Over the top bling accessories are going to quite a hit this season. People are going to enjoy dressing glamorous.

Modern Regalia: Tones of ivory and beige were embellished with opulent Zardozi and dramatic embroidery. Juxtaposing white and gold created a subtle and timeless regal quality.

Festive Bloom: This season floral prints were dark and edgy. Jewel tones like ruby red and amethyst added an air of romanticism and luxe. 

Heirloom Textiles: Traditional Indian techniques meet modern sensibilities. The color palette used was lots of rich and vibrant jewel tones with hints of gold.

RR at VOGUE Fashion's Night Out

We are thrilled to announce our participation in the fifth edition of  VOGUE Fashion’s Night Out '13. This year we have designed an exclusive wristlet/ipad sleeve and also reinterpreted the classic black clutch in our signature style. On September 5, get set for a fashion frenzy like Mumbai's never seen before!

What is Fashion's Night Out?

The world’s most fashionable all-night party is back for the fifth time. From Manhattan to Moscow and everywhere in between, Vogue’s Fashion’s Night Out is the one event that brings together designers, stars, celebrities and, of course, shoppers.

Everyone is invited and, with specially created events, great deals, exclusive designs and merchandise, you’ll have trouble keeping your credit card in your wallet. This global initiative was the brainchild of US Vogue Editor Anna Wintour, and started as a way to get people excited about shopping again, during the global recession. It is now celebrated in 16 countries, each hosting a unique version of its own. 

“Call it a luxury fest, a block party or a late-night retail extravaganza, either way Fashion’s Night Out has shaped up into an unique shopping experience for India,” says Priya Tanna, Editor of VOGUE India.

Vogue Desires - The Black Clutch

This year, Vogue India are planning a one-of-a-kind fashion installation. Vogue Desire – The Black Clutch will collectively showcase the varied talents and individual styles of some of India’s leading designers. Each work will be highlighted as part of an installation at Fashion’s Night Out 2013 and will be sold as individual collectibles, with all proceeds going to charity.

Taking the flapper girl as the inspiration Rachana Reddy's take on the Vogue Desires - The Black Clutch, should be sexy and strong and should be able to perk up any outfit.

"There's something very strong and seductive about the 20's fashion" says Rachana Reddy. The black feathers are juxtaposed with some gold bling, emphasizing on the two elements which were very prominent in the flapper girls' styling.

Fabric Alert: Indian Brocade

Today there is a vast variety of man-made and natural textiles available in the market. Due to technological and industrial advancements made in the textile sector it has become impossible for people to differentiate between traditional textiles and blended synthetic textiles. We thought for this post why not familiarize our audience with a popular traditional Indian textile, Indian brocade and highlight its usage in our collections.

At the Rachana Reddy studio we strive to blend tradition with contemporary luxury. Apart from using Indian silks in our collections we have also experimented with the idea of using Indian brocades too. We just can't get over this extremely opulent and luxe fabric! In an effort to reinvent traditional Indian brocade and cater to modern sensibilities, we specially source Indian brocades woven in geometric and bold patterns to use in our accessories. Our best sellers Padma & Carpet, Purdah and Oyster are a few clutches where we have incorporated the use of Indian brocade.

Brocade as we all know is a very majestic and ceremonial type of fabric that needs no added embellishment, as it stands absolutely luxurious on its own. Indian silk brocade, also known as Kimkhwab was started in the 17th Century in Benaras, a world famous center for handmade Indian textiles where the ancient tradition of weaving is still preserved. In the ancient time Benaras was famous for the weaving of cotton fabrics, but slowly switched over to silk weaving during the Mughal period (1526 - 1857). 

Kimkhwab, derived from Persian, means “a little dream,” a reference perhaps to the intricate patterns employed; it also means “woven flower,” an interpretation that appears more applicable to the brocade, in view of the floral patterns common to the material. Traditional Indian brocade was done with intricate designs using real gold & silver threads, reflecting ancient Mughal influence which is seen in the motifs used like floral and foliate motifs, animal motifs, architectural motifs inspired from the temples and mosques, and figures with intricate details.

Heavy gold and silver work, metallic visual effect, intricate detailed motifs and complex weaving are some of the essential characteristics of Indian brocade fabric. The simplest and  the best way to identify an authentic brocade is to see the back of the fabric as it will have groups of loose threads floating on the surface that have been trimmed away. The motif is not a part of the woven base fabric and is woven additionally using the Jacquard technique. As a result the back side of the fabric has a messy appearance.

Some people say our couture wooden clutches are like pieces of contemporary art, while some call them precious jewels, we at Rachana Reddy like to describe them as conversation starters. Clutches essentially are small bags without handles and straps used to carry money and personal things to a formal gathering. You literally clutch the bag in your palm, maybe that's how the name was derived in the first place.

We get a lot of inquires asking what would fit inside our clutches. Will a phone fit? Will my lipstick/mascara fit? And so on. *Design Plagiarism Alert*

A serious case of shameful & offensive plagiarism! 

While doing an extensive research and development exercise at our design studio for an upcoming collection we came across images of similar looking wooden clutch bags. For a split second the awful distinction didn't strike us as we were so engrossed & excited about our upcoming collection and thought it would be a previous collection done for some other retail outlet by us.  But a second closer look at the images, and to our astonishment we realized that someone has blatantly copied our designs and concepts. Imagine the amount of resemblance, that we thought it was our clutch bag at first!! Shocked and curious to know who were these people who were trying to shamelessly & fearlessly copy our work, we researched some more and found out that a brand called: AH bags by Ayesha Hussain (from Lahore, Pakistan ) were responsible for this daring unethical offense.

In a state of shock and disgust we are now trying to figure out how to go about this and take severe action, since we are still a young company. I hope our post creates awareness for other young designers in the business and also for people who buy designer products, that supporting plagiarism is a complete no – no and also indulging in the same!

When you copy someone’s work, their language, their style – you are copying a piece of their unique brand identity for which they are known in the market and are out rightly assaulting their years' worth of hard work. It is someone else's sweat and blood. A lot of work, thought and passion has gone into each of our designs and is totally unacceptable when an ignorant designer claims ownership to our intellectual property! In this case it’s a distasteful copy of many of our products! I request all of you to come together and support us against the fight for plagiarism and also spread the news. Any suggestions of how we should tackle this issue are most welcome.

Truth of life - One can never have too many accessories .
Being exclusively an accessories designer and having always given more priority to accessories in my wardrobe too, it was a natural creative urge to explore more with their design.
Two years of creating clutches and bags for my label has been challenging and creatively gratifying.While they have become my signature, I will continue to build on it.This year will see an addition of a small line of edgily elegant neck pieces in our signature combination of materials and with a new inclusion of metal.
